I wanted to saturate the colours to highlight the rustic texture of the decaying areas in Old Northam Street.
Alexey Titarenko- Ghosting
Alexey Titarenko received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Department of Cinematic and Photographic Art at Leningrad's Institute of Culture in 1983. He began taking photographs at the beginning of the 1970s, and in 1978 became a member of the well-known Leningrad photographic club Zerkalo, where he had his first solo exhibition (1978).
The photographs in this salon were all taken in the first few years after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Titarenko, using an old medium format camera and very slow black-and-white film, made moody, loving but honest, long exposure photographs of his city and its people. The mood is partly an artifact of the primitive Soviet-era equipment, but it also comes from Titarenko’s work in the darkroom. He uses the old techniques, selective bleaching and toning, dodging and burning, to create an almost eldritch combination of airiness and somberness.

Refining My Ideas
My Most Successful Photos:
Creating the ghost effect:
I chose this image because of the bold colours of the graffiti. I used curves on Photoshop to enhance these dynamic colours and make sure its visible through another layer.
I changed the top layers opacity of the photograph to make it opaque so that the vigorous colours show through and that the model appears faded and ghost-like.
Then I enhanced the colours in the background to make them stand out and contrast with the opaque model, and intensify the contrast. The photo has an eerie feel to it due to fear of ghosts and unknown.
I chose this photograph as my background because of the contrast in colours between the cars and the field. it also holds a lot of landscape that is used later.
The second layer shows the models movement and I have changed the top layers opacity so that then you can see through the layer.
I then added 2 more layers and changed the opacity of them so you can see all of the layers clearly and you can see how the models movements in a still photo.
I then increased the vibrancy to strengthen the colour of the photo and see clearly how the models are faded. I like how you're able to see several photos as one and how it shows you what is happening in the photo.
I chose this back ground because of the blurriness of it, making it unclear what you are looking at. I like that it's night time because it means the photograph might be seen as spooky or scary once complete.
I altered the brightness of the photo so that it was exaggerated meaning when another layer is put over the top of it, the colour can be seen through.
I then added another layer of the same photo but this time including a model. which I altered by changing the opacity so it looks the model looks faded and unreal.
Resolving my IdeasI liked this photo because it has a lot of potential because despite being a very colourful, bright background, it needed a model to make it look even better.
I made my model sit on the ground and added the layer on top and altered the opacity level so you could see how the model has faded.
I made my model sit on the ground because it shows isolation, and it expresses how people feel when they're secluded. I edited the model in a way that makes her fade away because that's how some people feel when they face loneliness. This concept makes a contrast between the dull colours of the ground and the clothes my model is wearing and the bright green colour of the grass around her.
I chose this background because I thought it was very boring and I thought that by intensifying the colours and including a model it could capture a moment that holds a story, left for viewers interpretation.
Here I have strengthened the colours and altered with the levels of contrast and brightness to make a very vibrant background, meaning that once it's covered by the second layer, they will be seen through the from behind the layer.
As you can see the first layer is faded, creating a ghost effect, creating more of a story to interpret, and colours are seen nicely as they aren't too much but they're still seen through the layer.
I chose to make a ghosting image using cars because I like how the ghost effect makes the cars look as though they are moving, making the image look alive.
I took two photographs, standing in the same position with a small time in between. I then put one on top of the other, as layers, and made the top layers opacity level low meaning its quite transparent, creating a faded ghost-like effect.

Final Piece Influenced by Alexey Titarenko
I researched into Alexey Titarenko's photography during this project after being suggested to me by my teacher. I have learnt how to show movement and/or the past and present (death) in a photo. I explored both of these themes and my initial thoughts were that they were quite dark and depressing, but the more i explored the theme, the more my opinion changed. Started with movement as I thought it would be easier and it looked more enjoyable to photograph. This is when my opinion changed on the photography as it was fun to photograph and the outcome was really good. Then as I moved onto death, it was harder as it wasn't easy to photograph, but I was able to create an eerie effect due to mysteriousness of death and the supernatural ghosts, which again I enjoyed, changing my opinion on the project ghosting.
I was hoping to create an effective effect with my photography and I thought it worked due to the eeriness of my first piece. I think i have successfully explored the theme due to the fact I have explored two different perspectives of ghosting (movement and death) effectively. If I had more time i think i would of liked to of explored movement into more of a detail, taking multiple photos of a crowd of people in public and creating the ghost effect on those photos as it would have even more of an effect.
